KITCHEN HOST INTERNSHIP

What is a kitchen host in Terra Alta?

The kitchen is the heart of the land where the harvest turns into delicious food. We are in search for someone that is passionate about food and excited about guiding a small group of people into cooking lunch and dinner daily.

Tasks will include:

-working together with the gardening apprentices to harvest what is needed

-guiding a small group of students and crew into cooking meals together (recipe ideas will be provided) as well as resetting the kitchen after each meal

-keeping inventory of our stock

If you are interested in experiencing community living while playing an active role in it, if you are passionate about cooking and are a team player this might be an opportunity for you.

You will not be expected to take on the role of a chef, just to be a guide for the group, to be responsible for keeping the kitchen tidy, and enjoy the process together. You will be hosted by a beautiful landscape and you'll meet many new friends!

Requirements

  • You speak English fluently

  • You like social engagement and living in a communal setting

  • You are independent and can take care of yourself

  • You are resilient and willing to receive feedback and adapt to the needs of the garden/project/people when needed

  • You have a sense of responsibility

  • You like to be in nature, camping and don't mind getting your hands dirty

  • You are available for the whole duration of the volunteering position which will last 1 month - see exact dates in the application form link at the bottom of the page

WHAT WE OFFER

We believe in a system of reciprocity, where we offer what we have - knowledge and expertise, an established land-based demonstration site, and also food and accommodation, in exchange for highly motivated people wanting to make a difference. We do not ask volunteers to pay any fees nor do we provide stipends.

  • Food - you will have access to all our garden vegetables and our staple ingredients. Please note that we offer vegetarian and mostly vegan food (except optional butter and eggs from our chickens) and we can not cater to other dietary requirements.

  • Accommodation: you will be camping in our serene cork oak forest

  • Use of facilities: communal showers (hot and cold) as well as compost toilets, a community kitchen, and social spaces

  • Training in facilitating a group of students to cook a meal for a large number of people

  • You will be able to join a up to two classes per week. Note that this will not give you a certification of completion of a permaculture design course, it will just give you the possibility to dive in a little bit

  • Access to an arts centre with musical instruments, building and handcraft tools

  • Wifi (limited as we run on solar energy and there are always some cloudy days, though generally speaking throughout the summer there is no shortage of sunny days). Please also note that there is very limited mobile data reception on the land

  • Meeting likeminded people from around the world and feeling what it's like to live on a permaculture project

APPLICATION PROCESS

Please fill in the application form and we will get back to you as soon as we can. This could take a couple of weeks, but we will get back to you absolute latest by the end of 2025 and we will contact you whether you have been accepted for an interview or not.
