Natural Building at Terra Alta - Cob, Reclaimed Wood, Light Straw Clay & Sustainable Construction in Portugal

Natural building is one of the oldest crafts, and remains to be one of the most relevant to this day. Natural building is not just an act of mixing straw, clay, and sand with your hands to

create a home, it is also a quiet rebellion, a radical act of self-reliance. 


What is natural building? Earth Architecture & Sustainable Techniques Explained

Natural building uses locally sourced, minimally processed materials such as earth, clay, straw, sand, stone and wood to create structures that are breathable, beautiful, and deeply connected to place while barely leaving a carbon footprint and needing very little input - often just your hands, some water, the earth, and a motivated group of friends! Common techniques of natural building are cob (a mix of clay, sand, and straw), adobe, lime plaster, wattle and daub, cordwood, and reusing reclaimed timber and stone. Each method has its own character and requires its own learning curve, but its well worth it in the end for the aesthetics, feel, and resilience of the structure. Cob Building: Clay, Sand & Straw Construction with Thermal Mass

Cob is a technique close to our hearts at Terra Alta. It only requires the earth beneath our feet and community. Clay-rich soil (which we have plenty of on this land) is mixed with sand and long-fibre straw, then carefully transformed into walls by hand (or foot!). The result is a load-bearing with incredible thermal mass. It absorbs heat during the day and radiates it back at night, keeping the interior naturally cool in summer and warm in winter.

Cob is also a particularly forgiving technique. You can carve into it, add to it, create round corners, integrate shelving and benches, integrate glass-art, and you can even create 3D artwork if you like! It invites creativity and exploration - as nature often does!

Built from clay, sand, and straw, this traditional earthen oven holds heat incredibly well. Perfect for community baking (bread, pizzas, roasted veggies etc) bringing people together around food and fire.

Reclaimed Wood: Sustainable Timber Construction & the Beauty of Salvaged Material

Working with reclaimed wood is another huge passion of ours at Terra Alta. In fact, our entire kitchen, from the structure itself to all the interior woodwork is made of reclaimed wood, partly from old palaces in the area. There is much to say about reclaimed wood, so I’ll keep it short, but the main thing is the feeling it gives in a space! Looking around a room made of reclaimed wood feels like a little time travel into spaces that wood has lived in before.

In addition to the beauty and the feeling of reclaimed wood, it very importantly reduces the demand for newly felled timber, making it an act of resistance against the felling of forests worldwide.

Traditional stone foundations:

Carefully placed, interlocking stones for a breathable and durable base for the building. Inspired by Japanese carpentry traditions, allowing slight movement without cracking.

Living roofs:

Planted roofs cool the inside, absorb rainwater, provide habitat for insects, and visually blend the building with the surrounding landscape.


Strawbale Walls:

Whole straw bales stacked like oversized bricks, offering incredible thermal insulation. These walls create cool indoor space in summer and retain warmth in winter while using a fully renewable agricultural by-product that is locally accessible.


Light Straw Clay Walls:

A lightweight mixture of loose straw coated in liquid clay and placed into temporary forms. The result is a breathable, insulating wall system that works really well in mediterranean climates.

Natural clay plasters:

Made with local clay and enhanced using traditional methods such as fermented prickly pear cactus mucilage for adhesion, cooked flour paste, and manure to improve waterproofing and natural pest resistance. These plasters regulate humidity and age beautifully.


Timber framing:

Structural frames built using wood saved from the Sintra forest after a massive storm. Joinery and proportions draw from Japanese styles, emphasising harmony, simplicity, and the expressive beauty of exposed timber.


Harmonised colour palette:

All our buildings follow a natural colour code: green inspired by the lichens on the cork oaks, contrasted with the pure white of limewash. This creates visual unity and a strong sense of beauty and harmony.

Building Community: Why Natural Building is an Act of Connection

A most important, and slightly underrated aspect of natural building is what happens when people build together. Before the age of hiring contractors and builders to do the work for us, communities used to build together, inviting deep connection and a sense of communal achievement and care for each other. Natural building invites this spirit back into our lives!


You don’t need to have any experience to join in a natural building mission and feel integrated quickly. The nature of the materials and the lack of heavy machinery invites all skill levels, all ages, and all levels of physical strength, making it a very accessible act. It also invites to dance together - mixing cob with our feet while listening to some great tunes!



Built to Last: Earthquake-Resistant, Fire-Resistant & Weatherproof Natural Buildings

One of the most common misconceptions about natural building is that it’s fragile. In reality, well-built earth structures have stayed standing for centuries! 

Living in Portugal, we experience earthquakes every now and then. Properly designed, naturally built structures have impressive earthquake resistance due to their flexible nature. They absorb and distribute the shock rather than fracturing along rigid joints. Thick earth walls also provide fire resistance and, when finished with lime plaster and good roof covering, they are resilient during rainy periods.

Natural buildings also breathe, which allows them to regulate moisture naturally, preventing condensation and mould growth (very important in this humid Sintra environment). And finally, if they need repairing, you can quite easily do it yourself or with a group of friends and you won’t need to spend lots of money on materials and workers.
